The Ancestor's Tale

A women, no more than 10 solar sweeps old, strode into the clearing, silver plate on her chest clattering softly. The royal-blood army followed a few paces behind her, some in armor similar to hers and others in full armor. A low-blood looked at her from across the open land, her eyes clouded with confusion as she took in the familiar half black, half white shirt and armor, her own army surrounding her. The armored maiden unsheathed her sword, etched with the words "Both sides will pay", and raised it skywards. Her army cheered behind her, but all she could pay attention to was the low-blood in front of her and the army that she turned against. A silent tear fell down her cheek, knowing that she couldn't join them with her leader watching. That she would never be forgiven by either side.

Rue Labai never meant to be the Betrayer. She was merely a blue-blooded troll in love with a rust-blood, who opened her eyes to the cruelty of the war which was started by a royal-blood that had lost his mind far before he should have. Forced into compliance through an unwanted kismesissitude with the leader of the royal-bloods and a bitter auspiticism between her matesprit and kismesissitude, she fought on both sides. Neither side knew what was going on around them, and she planned to keep it that way. Her Lusus, a great blue griffin, could no longer protect her from herself, and gave up trying. She would not listen, and so the Lusus could not reason with her anymore. She left her and the leader to their own devices with a heavy heart. Soon after, during a particularly terrible rage, the leader of the royal-blood army forced the truth out of Rue. She called out for her Lusus, who was long gone and slowly falling apart. She had no savior and was blackmailed into fighting solely on the royal-blood's side. Which brings us to the Battle of the Clearing, named both for the clearing where it took place and for the unveiling of her two-sided loyalty. Seeing her matesprit on the opposite side of the clearing, sword raised in hand, preparing to command the slaughter of thousands, broke the low-bloods heart. She called out that Rue would never be allowed to return to the lands of the low-bloods, that she would be killed on spot for her betrayal. She gave control of the army over to another troll and walked away. After the battle, Rue had planned to find her and speak to her, but she was dragged away by her kismesis. Back at the base, she was surrounded by trolls who were neither her friends nor her enemies. She was always having to watch her back and make sure that she didn't get on anyone's bad side. Only one low-blood still trusted her. Rue spied for the low-blood, reported back any details that might help the low-bloods army, anything that would prove her innocence. But they were found out, and the low-blood was murdered in front of Rue. The leader, who swore his love to her so long ago, finally snapped once and for all. He tried to kill her, but luckily she escaped just in time. Little did she know, the leader ordered his best assassin to kill her. Poor, naive Rue had no idea that she was being followed. She returned to the lands of the low-bloods, facing death to see the troll who she truly loved and ask for her forgiveness. At first, the low-blood, who was thought of as an almost-queen of the low-bloods, ordered her removal, saying that Rue was a blue-blood, and that she was a fool to think that Rue would ever love a rust-blood like her. But Rue proved to her that her heart truly belonged with her and her army. Just as she was about to let Rue know that she forgave her, the assassin stabbed her in the back. Rue fell forward with a gasp, her eyes wide and bluer than ever, filled with pain and suffering. A tear fell from her eye as she took her last breath. The assassin looked up at the low-blood, nodded, and disappeared into the night. The low-blood queen bent down on her knees beside Rue and whispered in her ear that she had forgiven her, and that she would always love her. Rue's Lusus appeared for the first time in solar sweeps and dipped its head, wings folded at its sides, bowing to Rue's body and to her matespirt, before disappearing once more.
